Day in a life of a teacher assistant

There is never enough hours of the day… From sun up to sun down it’s never ending. I’m a teacher assistant and I want to tell you about my day…

First, get to school at 7:25, bell rings at 7:30 (have to take the pre-k child to class, then sweet talk to other 2 older ones to take my items to class before the bell rings so I can be outside to greet kids at 7:30). Get outside, greet kids, I’m LOVING this cooler weather but it’s Cold in the mornings! My hands are numb opening doors for the kids. I’m waving bye to parents, they don’t even acknowledge… Kids are trying to walk in front of their parents cars, we get smoked out of the exhaust, and not to mention the odors from inside some of these cars… Did you smoke a whole pack of weed with your child in the car???

Announcements start and you know it’s about time to go inside… cars are still rolling in, and when they stop you look at the time 8:10, your late to your own class… come inside better go to the bathroom, who knows when you will see it next.

Get in the classroom, kids are yelling, everyone is excited to start the day… Then you have that ONE child… Help us Jesus! That One child makes you want to turn in your notice. They are running crazy! You get everyone calm so the teacher can begin just to realize they have a meeting after reading… so you know you will be by yourself in an hour.

Small groups start, your doing letters, hold up the letter P, “that’s F!” No that’s P… Next letter, W “that’s Y!” No that’s a W… Then the sound “P says Fffffff!!!! I know I’m right this time!” Nope not quite… Then you glance up just to see that ONE child climbing on a bookshelf just to jump off! Like seriously?!? Called behavior support… (9:15)… Move on to reading, talk about setting “when the story takes place” good job class! And what else (pointing at my watch)… “Lunch time?” 🙄 No not lunch time, but it can tell the time… “when is Lunch time???” UGH!!!! “Focus y’all!”

10:00 just realized behavior support never showed when THAT child dialed 911… Yup, I called them again… Why call for help if they aren’t even going to come?? You decide to take the child for a walk to go heat up your lunch… can’t go to the bathroom because if you let that child’s hand go, they will run…

Now it’s lunch time… We sit down for a nice quiet lunch in the classroom with Magic school bus playing. Side note: Did you know you can watch that without ads on YouTube?!? I was excited! Anyways, THAT child ate quick and once they are done, everyone should be done. With 15 minutes to go…. They will push buttons on the computer make the show stop, run out the class, try to take food from other kids, the list goes on… By now it’s recess, can’t go outside with one teacher. Indoor recess it is… The “runner” knows how to do recess inside, he’s been doing it all day! Once he’s bored, it starts all over again.

Then its 1:00, the teacher is back in the room, you finally get a bathroom break! Come out the bathroom and “runner” is waiting on you in the hallway… Once you go to the class, the teacher says the principal needs to see me in the office… I go down there and I’m then told “Starting Tuesday you are being moved to Kindergarten… we need someone more leading in there.”

My thoughts: How are you moving someone that the kids are used to just to accommodate the teacher and the teachers needs??? I don’t feel that should go on. I wonder how the new teacher assistant is going to take on THAT kid??? Will she be able to keep up with him? Will the kids that moved with me from last year be ok, how will they take it???

2:00 prepare to go home… All the kids, “bye, see you tomorrow! Love you!” There maybe hard times in here, but that makes it all worth it! Now for Tuesday I have to change and go into another classroom just to start all over again and miss out on this group of kids learning their letters, getting the sounds right and even reading! 😥

Jackson Party of 5

Welcome to the crazy show! I’m the star, mom. There’s 3 munchkins, Tt, Jj and Mas…. And of course we have Dad, can’t leave him out! We are the Jackson party of 5. We are here to talk about what it’s like to have so many challenges.

So today, wacky day at school. Pretty cool day. Get to dress up with crazy hair, mix matched shoes, backwards clothes… So why did a parent come up and ask, “Is it wacky day???” “Nope I wear my hair like this everyday.” Like really? I get it’s Monday, but is it really THAT Monday???

I get to teach 5th graders today which was awesome, something I never had done before and how about I listen in to a conversation about “are you a virgin?” HOLD UP!!! That’s high school talk! Where y’all get so fast from??? Parents, slow your children!!! That’s crazy!!! I’m a mom and all and knowing that my oldest will be listening to that next year, NOPE! Don’t grow up!!! It’s a trap! 5th grade is awesome though because even though they are about as tall as me, some are so well behaved. My last class, I have a kid come up and hug me and said “I have been looking forward to class with you all day!” My heart melts then she says “you’re my favorite teacher…” “Awww!” I feel so special then I realize we’ll that’s just because I’m your last class of the day, so… Happy Monday!
